INSIDE AFRICA: Central African Republic Gold-Mine Collapse - 40 Miners Killed, Many Others Injured!
June 25, 2013 - CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC - A gold-mining pit collapsed in the Central African Republic, killing at least 40 small-scale miners, the presidency said.
An unspecified number of people were injured in the accident, which followed heavy rains, President Michel Djotodia’s office said in a statement read on state state radio in the capital, Bangui. The death told may rise further, it said.
“The president extends his condolences to the victims’ families,” the presidency said, announcing that three days of mourning will start today.
Most gold production in Central African Republic, which is about the size of Texas, is artisanal, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The country produced 53 kilograms (117 pounds) of the metal in 2011, according to the agency’s website.
