AFRICAN EDUCATION: Angelique Kidjo - Africa's Success Lies In Better Education!
January 22, 2015 - AFRICA - Africa needs to place increased emphasis on improving education in order to succeed, says Benin musician, Angelique Kidjo.
Looking at the state of education on the continent, Kidjo indicated that it’s not enough to just put children through the education system - quality education must also be provided.
“Our kids, are they really ready to take on the challenge of this century?
I don’t think so because some of them don’t know how to read or write,” she said in an interview with CNBC Africa at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
The Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter also stated that it’s imperative that leaders place importance on adequate training for teachers.
Kidjo, who received the Crystal Award for her humanitarian work at the WEF opening ceremony, stated that the meeting is a fantastic opportunity for African’s to showcase the positive aspects of the continent.
“We’re always going to have some problems but if we don’t start dealing with them, creating an environment of jobs for our youth in Africa, we will have more and more youth that will join extremist groups,” she said.
“We will have more and more youth in Africa that want to live in the West.”
Kidjo added that Africa needs to learn to create its own narrative if it wants others to take the continent seriously. - CNBC Africa.
